Bruckner Exhibitions 2024

An entire country celebrated Anton Bruckner! This was also reflected in the number of exhibitions about the composer, whose 200th birthday was celebrated in 2024. To mark this important anniversary, exhibitions about Anton Bruckner were organised throughout Upper Austria with historical, biographical and geographical approaches. The following overview lists the museums and exhibitions where Bruckner was – and in some cases still is – on the programme.

Being Anton - Playing Anton

At the Ars Electronica Centre, visitors were able to immerse themselves in the world of the famous composer in an unprecedented way: The centre offered a sound experience in Deep Space 8K with the Bruckner Orchester Linz and an installation on the world of Bruckner’s thoughts and his time.

The work focuses on the women who played a role in Anton Bruckner’s life. There are many stories and myths surrounding his life and his relationship with women. However, it is not a project that attempts to thematise the relationships between Bruckner and women; the focus is on the visibility of the women.

 

UN#HEARD OF, this Bruckner!

Music & relationship stories from Steyr

The City Museum is dedicating the special exhibition “UN#HEARD OF, this Bruckner!” to the life and work of Anton Bruckner, in particular his relationship with Steyr. On display is the man Bruckner and interactive music installations take visitors into unknown worlds of sound.

In the old sacristan’s house next to the parish church, Wolfgang Hack organised a show entitled “Anton Bruckner in Steyr – Where I enjoy staying every year”, which sheds light on the composer’s life and the history of the time.

From 2025, a visit for groups is possible on request.

Smallest Bruckner Museum in the World

As a 19-year-old schoolboy in Kronstorf, Bruckner felt ‘like he was in heaven’ and described himself as a composer for the first time. The market town has reorganised Bruckner’s former living room as a museum.

Anton Bruckner's teacher and the Biedermeier period in Enns

A visit to the special exhibition on Leopold von Zenetti (1805-1892), Anton Bruckner’s teacher, is an excursion into the town of Enns in the 19th century. There are many unknown and unexpected details to discover about the living conditions and events in Enns during the organist and choirmaster’s lifetime.

This special exhibition at the birthplace of the great master used the anniversary as an opportunity to present both newly discovered historical Bruckner artworks and new ones created for the occasion.

Exhibition at St Florian Monastery

The exhibition of the OÖ KulturEXPO Anton Bruckner 2024 provided an insight into the life and creative stages of the composer at the monastery for the first time with a large number of documents from the monastery archive. Three monumental pavilions in the monastery courtyard invited visitors to experience Bruckner’s dreams and visions in exciting multimedia presentations.

The Bruckner exhibition will be open to the public again through St. Florian Monastery from 1 May 2025 as part of guided tours. Further information can be found in advance on the monastery website.

Special exhibition to mark the Bruckner anniversary

The special exhibition „Brucknerstadt Perg? We’re celebrating anyway“ showed documents proving Anton Bruckner’s relationship with Perg, including an original letter from Anton Bruckner to Mayor Karl Terpinitz from 1863.

More than 175 years of spa tradition in Bad Kreuzen

The exhibition covers a wide range of topics, from the cold-water spa to modern spa operations and water in general. One section is also dedicated to Anton Bruckner, who stayed in Bad Kreuzen on several occasions.

Anton Bruckner's first place of work

The ‘Old School’ commemorates Bruckner’s first engagement as a school assistant. As part of the Bruckner Year, his workplace in Windhaag was redesigned and is open to visitors as a place of learning and remembrance.

Searching for Anton Bruckner’s identity

The story of Bruckner has been retold and brought to life in six themed rooms. Views, original artefacts and documents as well as contemporary visualisations cast a new light on a great musician.

There were also other art exhibitions focussing on Bruckner, which you can find in our event archive (only in German) using the filter function ‘Ausstellung’ and ‘Bildende Kunst’.
