"The colorful shoes" - just a dream? A ballet by Ivelin Stoyanova to the music of Anton Bruckner. Based on an own libretto, adapted to the music of Anton Bruckner in cooperation with children and professional dancers, a ballet choreographed by Stoyanova Ivelin is created, in order to bring especially the younger generations closer to the diversity of Bruckner's music.

Past and present, interwoven through music
Bruckner created numerous works for choir, which will certainly be heard throughout Upper Austria in his anniversary year. We juxtapose a few selected choral pieces by Bruckner with modern compositions by contemporary artists such as Eric Whitacre, Bob Chilcott, Karl Jenkins, Sarah Quartel, Ola Gjelo, Jakko Mäntyjärvi et al. and look forward to an exciting program.

As a guest in Kirchdorf, the composer liked to make excursions to the surrounding area, including (probably in 1879) to Burg Altpernstein (castle).
Several anecdotes tell of a visit to the castle. Only with difficulty and partly "Engerl getragen" (sitting on the folded hands of his companions) could he manage the steep castle path.
Bruckner wanted to be locked up in the castle dungeon there (the "rock dungeon"). Moved by the agony of "imprisonment," he is said to have sung - again in freedom - "Resurrexit!" ("He is risen!"). Those who wish can also expose themselves to the situation of being imprisoned and then write down their impressions in musical notation. At the Jazztage on July 4 and 5, improvisation will then take place on these musical templates.

"Happy birth year, Anton!"
Soon we will celebrate Anton Bruckner's 200th birthday. How did he live as a child and what music did he listen to at the village festival?
Meeting point is at 4:00 pm in the box office foyer of the Brucknerhaus Linz.
Your parents can simply bring you to the box office foyer at 4:00 p.m. for each appointment and pick you up there again at 5:30 pm, because of course only children have access to Anton's Kidsclub!
By the way: If you come to all nine dates, there will also be a great surprise waiting for you at the end!
Remembrance of the "Orgelwanderung (organ hike)" of that time and an opportunity to retrace this path.
In the spring of 1869, Anton Bruckner made a triumphant concert tour to France.
In July of the same year, an excursion took place with friends from Kirchdorf and Schlierbach, during which Bruckner played the Abbey organ.
Alois Spannesberger, then secretary and later choir master of the Kirchdorf Liedertafel:
"I am an enthusiastic music lover, have heard many beautiful things in Vienna, Linz and Salzburg etc., also many a good organist. But this divine hour, which Bruckner gave us with his sublime playing, I will not forget throughout my life."
The concert of the Music School will feature original compositions by Bruckner and his contemporaries, as well as paraphrases and jazz improvisations on Bruckner themes.

The Symphonies
Complete Versions
Edition
The Bruckner Orchester Linz and the ORF Radio-Symphonieorchester Wien, under the overall direction of Markus Poschner, have decided to embark on a unique expedition to mark the 200th anniversary of the composer's birth: the recording of all the symphonies of the genius loci, and for the first time in all versions. By the anniversary year 2024, this extraordinary edition will be available in its entirety on the Capriccio label.
The uniqueness of this project lies not only in its entirety, but above all in its radically new interpretive approach. The Bruckner Orchester Linz and the ORF Radio-Symphonieorchester Wien have been intimately familiar with an authentic performance practice of Bruckner for decades. Poschner, with these two orchestras, which historically accurately depict Bruckner's sphere of influence, exposes his symphonies in an unheard-of new way, makes the music dance and sing, traces the Austrian dialect of sound musically, and in the process discovers many surprising things that have so far either been ignored, misunderstood, or simply unnoticed in the reception history of these symphonies. Bruckner comes from Upper Austria, but he is not ours alone. His music belongs to the world, is heard throughout the world, and thus the world always hears of his origin.
Bruckner is and makes world.
We make his music unmistakable

1824 - 1924 - 2024: Three dates are at the center of the symposium. In 1824, the journey to Anton Bruckner and his Linz environment takes its starting point. In 1924, the focus shifts to the building history and architecture of the Mariendom in Linz. In 2024, these giants unite to form a common cosmos: this is why this symposium relates Anton Bruckner and the Neo-Gothic in architecture, music and history for the first time and offers exciting insights into the world of 1824 - 1924 - 2024.

Theater INNklusiv invites you to witness the three life stories of Anton Bruckner, to embark on the common journey there, to remember Anton Bruckner, Anton Bruckner and last but not least Anton Bruckner for the next two hundred years, even if we ourselves will neither remember nor be able to pronounce our own name in a hundred years.
In the meantime traditional and quite proven way, different music genres, self-written texts, together compiled choreographies and a particularly built stage design for a theater experience of and for humans with and without handicap will provide, colorfulness to learn to love (if that is not already so). Everyone between 0 and 200 years is invited to join in the celebration, to sing and last but not least to dance, therefore we only say: "All Anton!"

The original sound movement, initially specializing in Renaissance and Baroque music, has long since reached the music of the Romantic period and has also led to exciting recordings of Bruckner symphonies.
The study of music from earlier eras requires a great deal of knowledge in the areas of stylistics and instrumentology, performance practice, music history, etc., and is a tradition at the Landesmusikschule Kirchdorf. Except for the Corona break, there has been a concert of early music every November since 2003 (since 2004 followed by a Junker tasting).
On the program is music from early and high baroque with a little preview of the soon to begin anniversary year.
This year, Bruckner-cider and Bruckner-wine will be available for tasting after the concert.

"From Anton Bruckner's music cabinet"
Anton Bruckner became acquainted with the music of composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel at an early age. His knowledge of the masterpieces of his predecessors, which of course included the Viennese classics and Franz Schubert, later helped him to develop his skills as a composer and improviser.
A concert of music that Bruckner must have heard..... followed by wine and must, which he appreciated just as much!

"The Unrecognized Genius" is a documentary that gives numerous interpreters of Bruckner's music a chance to speak.
The feature film "Anton Bruckner's Decision" is about his decision to give up the position of cathedral organist in his familiar Linz in order to work in Vienna in the future as a professor at the Conservatory and court organist.
In both films, much space is given to Bruckner's original music.

In the course of concerts for the "Verein für musikalische Privataufführungen," Arnold Schönberg initiated the creation of a version for chamber ensemble of Bruckner's 7th Symphony by commissioning three of his students (Hans Eisler/Erwin Stein/Karl Ranke). This version has an astonishingly transparent sound of fascinating clarity. The music theorist and organist Matthias Giesen has created a similar version with Bruckner's 6th Symphony.

Theresia Helm, Anton Bruckner's mother, was born in Neuzeug in 1801 at Theresia-Helm-Strasse 28.
Theresia grew up in a rich parental home in Neuzeug.
Her parents owned a lot of land and the income from her father as an official administrator of the Gschwendt estate,
as well as the income from the inn and they also had the Messerer and Verlegergerechtigkeit.
So Anton Bruckner on his mother's side is a real 'Sierninger - Neuzeuger'.
Later, Anton Bruckner repeatedly stayed at today's Landhotel Forsthof and once dedicated the song Die Rose (The Rose) to the daughter of the house, whom he greatly admired.
He was also a founding member of the Liedertafel Sierninghofen-Neuzeug, which is still at home in the Gasthof Landerl and holds weekly choir rehearsals - if able to sing.
Anton Bruckner was also the author of their motto.

When Anton Bruckner applied for a position as Kapellmeister in Vienna at the age of fifty, he proudly wrote that he had "grown up with church music". There is hardly a symphonic concert hall in which the F minor Mass or the Te Deum have not been heard, hardly a church choir that does not have the Ave Maria, the Christus factus est or the Locus iste in its program. But a large part of his sacred work is unknown. Who knows that Bruckner set the Ave Maria and the Christus factus est to music three times each, in different phases of his life and in different styles? Who knows Bruckner's German-language choruses for weddings, funerals and name days? To this day, his music lies buried under clichés - that of the 'pious' and 'deeply religious' organist or that of the composing professor who, with his Catholicism, seems to have fallen out of time and world. This work guide offers for the first time well-founded information on Bruckner's complete sacred works, critically and with a fresh eye. All works are described against their social, religious, and liturgical backgrounds, combined with practical performance advice.

Musikschule der Stadt Linz (Music School of the City of Linz)
Anton Bruckner does not usually play a prominent role in the everyday life of music schools, because his compositions are difficult to convey or perform for music students due to their complexity.
Yet, the Musikschule Linz wants to honor the work of the great Upper Austrian composer by using the Bruckner-Year as an occasion to enable young musicians and the public to approach Bruckner's music in unusual ways.
Five renowned composers will be invited to write a commissioned work (maximum 10 minutes long) that deals with Bruckner's musical heritage (without necessarily using Bruckner motifs) and is tailor-made for young, aspiring soloists - students of the Musikschule Linz - as well as for the Symphonische Orchester der Musikschule Linz.

Not just as listeners in front of the stage, but in the middle of the orchestra.
In the immersive sound space of the Ars Electronica Center, we can explore the world of thought and spirit of Anton Bruckner and his contemporaries. With quotations, musical examples and many cross-references to the major themes and moving events that defined Anton Bruckner's lifetime. This special sound space turns each visitor into an "interactive mixer". Each step we take in this sound space, each movement of the head brings specific texts, sounds, quotations and examples to the fore and each can create their very own journey through the world of Anton Bruckner's thoughts.
The program contains mainly pieces from Bruckner's environment, by composers whom Bruckner will have known or by whom he may have been influenced. Due to the unusual instrumentation, the works are performed extremely rarely and promise an exciting listening experience in any case. The ensemble plays exclusively on original instruments from the 19th century.

At the age of 17, Bruckner was not that much older than the students and was sent to Windhaag in the Bohemian Forest as a trained school assistant, where he enjoyed hitherto unknown freedoms - but also had to fulfill and perform a wide range of tasks and services, which was associated with privations.
An information room in the old school, which is only semi-public but open to the public, is a reminder of this. This is Bruckner's workplace in Windhaag, which, at the instigation of owner Irmgard Quass, is now a Bruckner-place of learning and remembrance in one, and whose exhibition room is to be redesigned by Anton Bruckner in 2024.

Bruckner Forever!
Nordico Linz
September 2024 - February 2025
Nordico City Museum Linz
Anton Bruckner is not just a local phenomenon in Upper Austria, but a world-renowned and recognized great as a musician. Who was this man, in whose honor an entire year is proclaimed in Linz and Upper Austria 200 years after his birth?
The exhibition embarks on a journey into Bruckner's past, exploring the set pieces that remain or have emerged over time and placing them in new contexts. Between provincial dust and the big city, we encounter an introverted nerd, an unrecognized genius and his search for love. The life and work of the musical genius is illuminated as well as critically questioned from today's perspective. Views, original artifacts and documents, as well as contemporary visualizations shed new light on a
great musician. In six themed rooms, the story of Bruckner is retold and made tangible.
The 7th Symphony by that composer, who regularly came to Bad Ischl for the birthday of Emperor Franz Joseph I and liked to call himself "the emperor's organist", will conclude the KIRCH'KLANG Festival 2023.
Martin Haselböck and his Orchester Wiener Akademie have been internationally renowned for many years for their interpretation of romantic orchestral works in their original sound.

The inhabitants of the 72 Brucknerstreets, alleys, paths and squares throughout Upper Austria receive a visit. From David Wagner, who travels the famous destinations by cargo bike, completely unmotorized. Not without the sheet music of the nine Bruckner symphonies in his luggage. And not without his helmet camera, which he needs to record the encounters with the people at his destinations on video.
For these are asked for audio donations of 15-second motifs from the 9 Bruckner symphonies - from which David Wagner then creates a 9-minute film with Bruckner's 9 symphonies in the interpretation of a more or less random cross-section of the Upper Austrian population. Plus another cinematic 9-minute film documenting his 24 outings. One as well as the other can be seen in the fall of 2024.

The fact that you can pull art like chewing gum, condoms, drinks, snacks and tobacco out of a vending machine is no longer entirely new. In contrast to the art vending machine, which its inventor Helene Huemer has equipped with all kinds of sculptures, medals, scrolls and comics in the Bruckner style.
Now it is going on tour throughout Upper Austria - and demands to be filled again and again by people eager to create.

The Upper Austrian Horn Players Celebrate Anton Bruckner
After the flash mob "Spiel AnTon!" in the pedestrian zone, there will be an open air concert in the castle garden. A nationally assembled orchestra of more than 100 horn players under the direction of Prof. Raimund Zell will perform, among others, the "Funeral Music on the Death of Richard Wagner" from the second movement of Anton Bruckner's 7th Symphony, a suite with themes from his 8th Symphony and a commissioned work by Thomas Doss. This concert will also commemorate Prof. Erich Pizka, who would celebrate his 110th birthday on December 10, 2024. He was solo hornist with the Bruckner Orchester Linz, professor at the Bruckner Conservatory (today Anton Bruckner Private University) and is considered the "father" of the great horn family. A real "cloud of sound" awaits you - certainly a special experience in this ambience!

2024 marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of composer Anton Bruckner. For the Vienna Brass Connection this is more than a reason to celebrate and so there will also be a Bruckner focus in the versatile concert program to honor this powerful music accordingly. The ensemble plays selected music that reflects the whole spectrum of life: sometimes loud, sometimes soft, sometimes cheerful and sometimes sad, sometimes high, sometimes low, sometimes Bruckner, etc.

To be able to encounter Anton Bruckner in a variety of ways and to find points of contact to one's own history in the confrontation with the artist and man born 200 years ago is the goal of the mediation for the Bruckner anniversary year 2024 in Upper Austria. In doing so, we play on the broad keyboard of mediating formats: Whether audio books for very young ears, exciting Bruckner action days during the vacations, a children's book or a TikTok challenge - young Upper Austrians will be picked up with a colorful palette of offers on their way to Bruckner.
on their way to Bruckner. For schools at all levels, a separate portfolio is being created, on the one hand with age-appropriate materials, and on the other with projects directly in the classroom, but also at Bruckner locations in Upper Austria with reference to the region of the respective school. For the nearly 36,000 Upper Austrian music students - but also for choirs and music clubs - special arrangements are created to enable them to play and sing Anton Bruckner's music on all instruments, from entry level to professional level.
Inclusion and music by all, for all is therefore the order of the day! In cooperation with festivals and artists, new perspectives and shared musical experiences are created for people with and without disabilities.

"With no other composer has the world taken less notice of his idiosyncrasies than with Bruckner. Hardly anywhere else is the biographical material as meager as in the case of this solitary great," Göllerich stated. That is why the Bruckner-Resonanzen invite us to come closer to the man Anton Bruckner in words & music. Original texts by and anecdotes about Bruckner are congenially combined with his compositions and arrangements for organ as well as sound creations in resonance with the giant.

Anton Bruckner spent several years of his summer vacation at Stift Wilhering and on this occasion made contact with a monkey that was "imprisoned" there in the Palmenhaus. The monkey's name has not been handed down, but he jumps from note to note in one of Bruckner's symphonies. What did the two have to tell each other?
The author Karin Peschka, the composer Rudolf Jungwirth and the director Joachim Rathke take this strange episode as an opportunity to dive into the rich inner world of this brilliant composer, brimming with contradictions. As in the highly successful time travel "MONKS" (2022), the audience becomes part of a journey, from the barn to the Palmenhaus and on to the church.

The sound researcher Dr. Richard Eigner, who has attracted international attention with his project "Die Entlärmung des Lärms," takes interested people of all ages on an acoustic voyage of discovery back to the sphere of sound with which Anton Bruckner was confronted at his places of education, encounter and influence.
Using highly sensitive recording equipment such as small-diaphragm condenser microphones, hydrophones (suitable for underwater listening) and solid-borne sound transducers, participants will jointly approach those sounds that shaped Bruckner's natural soundscape on a daily basis. How has this changed since the composer's time of activity?

At St. Florian Abbey, Anton Bruckner's visions are referred to in the visual arts. The monumental experience rooms are erected on the proverbial green meadow. Their shape is based on the silhouette of the famous composer. The interior is accessible without barriers. Multimedia presentations allow visitors to experience Bruckner's dreams and visions. The spectrum ranges from his desire to get to know Franz Josef Land in the Northern Arctic Ocean to his many efforts to come as close as possible to God. A globally unique, digital and interactive Anton Bruckner listening room is also being created, which is intended to appeal to specialist audiences as well as students and interested laypersons. More than 4.000 sound recordings from the music collection of the OÖ Landesmuseum (Upper Austrian Provincial Museum) will be heard.

Anton Bruckner has already made history, while the quantum physicists working in Austria are currently doing so. The fact that significant contributions to quantum physics mechanics and quantum computing come from the Alpine Republic has been recognized at least since Anton Zeilinger was awarded the 2022 Nobel Prize in Physics.
BruQner is one of the first attempts worldwide to work artistically with real quantum effects. In the process, quanta meet fifths, so to speak: Striking passages from Bruckner's work are made audible in a new way to make the workings of a quantum computer tangible.
Austrian-based research is leading the way in the development of quantum technology. A sensual symbiosis of music, visuals and modern science is created. Marvel with us and hear the future potential in Bruckner's music!

ANTON BRUCKNER OVERTURE IN G MINOR
RICHARD WAGNER OVERTURE TO THE OPERA TANNHÄUSER
ANTON BRUCKNER MASS IN D MINOR
As the former artistic director of the Wiener Sängerknaben and der Wiener Hofmusikkapelle for many years, Uwe Christian Harrer wants to establish the connection to Anton Bruckner, in addition to his hometown of Leonding, also through the performers and the selection of the music program.
Bruckner had regular dealings with the then k. k. Hofkapellknaben, today's Wiener Sängerknaben, as court organist; he worked with them and wrote his third mass for them, that in F minor. After the great success of the D minor Mass in Linz, this work was performed for the first time in Vienna in February 1867 in the Hofburgkapelle.
The Overture in G minor stands as an example for those compositions that were written before the turn of 1863, while the D minor Mass, with its closeness to Bruckner's progressive symphonic language, stands for those works that are to be counted after the "acquittal," i.e., after the celebration in Leonding am Kürnberg.
With Richard Wagner's opera "Tannhäuser", Bruckner became acquainted with the daring modernity of the musical theme and the dimensions of bold architecture under his teacher Otto Kitzler. The overture to this mystical medieval material shows the interesting field of tension in the history of music in the second half of the 19th century.

With his "novel biography in four movements", the Upper Austrian author composes a mischievous musical mosaic for the famous recording artist and at the same time asks the question: What does Bruckner's world hold in store for his own forks in the road?

Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy was a kind of contemporary classicist in the first decades of Anton Bruckner's work and as such had a lasting influence on the orchestral works from Bruckners' student days, in which echoes the theme and instrumentation of the Hebrides Overture, for example. The Symphony No. 3 in A minor, which became popular under the epithet "Scottish," on the other hand, was known to Bruckner at least from the concert hall.
His own highly individual symphonic style is first documented by Bruckner's Symphony No. 1 in C minor, premiered in Linz in 1868, with which the composer, already over 40 years of age, set out into new worlds and confidently entered the musical field that was avowedly the most important for him: that of symphonic music. When he subjected the work to a fundamental revision beginning in 1890, resulting in its "Wiener Fassung" ("Viennese version") which theViennaPhilharmonic Orchestra launched on December 13, 1891, he affectionately and jokingly referred to it as his "saucy Beserl.

Markus Poschner and the Bruckner Orchester Linz set standards in the rendition of the music of the genius loci. This expertise obliges them to pass it on - with the aim of enabling the younger generation to experience Bruckner at its source.
The principal conductor of the Bruckner Orchester Linz and honorary professor of the Anton Bruckner Private University introduces conductors to the works of Anton Bruckner in an international master class. Poschner is a charismatic instigator who knows how to lead into corners of scores to uncover the wonder of music in all its uniqueness.
The masterclass will take place at the Anton Bruckner Private University and is a cooperation between the university, the Bruckner Orchester Linz and Anton Bruckner 2024.
The space and sound installation Dark Matter deals with a historically special as well as particularly delicate performance practice of Bruckner's works: Around the dark concerts during the Nazi era, for which the Vienna Konzerthaus was completely darkened. Hearing Bruckner in this way was promoted as a pseudo-religious and transcendent experience in the spirit of National Socialism.
85 years after the first of these lightless concerts, Dark Matter transforms the Minoritenkirche in Wels into a darkened space and sound setting. The staging of the location and the aesthetic in which Bruckner's 7th Symphony is heard, however, deliberately refers not to fascism but to the drone music happenings of the 1960s. As a result, Bruckner's music once again undergoes a reinterpretation that frees it from its Nazi reference against its will.
Lucas Norer
After the early death of his father, Bruckner was sent by his mother to the nearby monastery of Sankt Florian as a choirboy. Following the family tradition, he decided to pursue a career as a teacher. As a school assistant in the village of Windhaag, conflicts soon arose with his superior, which eventually led to his transfer to Kronstorf: Bruckner had composed too much. You can hear what Bruckner composed during this time in this concert.

Franz Welser-Möst is undoubtedly one of the great conductors of our time at the helm of the Upper Austrian Youth Symphony Orchestra. Just like Anton Bruckner, he also struck his first musical roots in Upper Austria.
This is now also the case with the young musicians of the Oö. Jugendsinfonieorchester, which is an orchestra of the Upper Austrian Landesmusikschulwerk. This common musical breeding ground is the starting point for a special series of four concerts, in which the young musicians and Franz Welser-Möst dedicate themselves to the genius loci - Anton Bruckner.
Around 80 young musicians will be given a unique opportunity as part of the Bruckner-Year 2024: they can work and make music with Franz Welser-Möst. The Oö. Jugendsinfonieorchester of the Upper Austrian Landesmusikschulwerk will play a total of four concerts from March 31, 2024, conducted by Maestro Möst.
The four concerts of the Upper Austrian Youth Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Franz Welser-Möst will take place on:
1. March 31, 2024, Jahnturnhall Ried im Innkreis
2. April 1, 2024, Toskana Kongress Gmunden
3. April 2, 2024, Stadttheater Wels
4. April 3, 2024, Donausaal Mauthausen
The Oö. Jugendsinfonieorchester of the Upper Austrian Landesmusikschulwerk has existed for around 25 years and is made up of the best young musicians in the state. It is an offer for young musicians who like to make music together and want to get to know the world of symphonic orchestra music.

7 artists print lithographs from the stone and create an individual reference to Anton Bruckner.
In contrast to earlier times - in the inventor Senefelder's time in the 18th century, when there were only male artists and printers - or even in Anton Bruckner's lifetime, printed matter was printed by men. Only later, as the only exception among the artists, Käthe Kolwitz became an artistic role model with a strong statement in her lithographs.
So today, even in physically heavy, elaborate, old printing techniques, as it is especially the lithography after Senefelder, the women artists are now even the majority.
This beautiful special technique is without digital simplification of the press nevertheless not obsolete.

As HerStory in opposition to History, Für Theresia directs attention to the women in Bruckner's life. One of the few constants alongside his sisters and the housekeeper Kathi Kachelmaier is Mother Theresa, who also gave the traveling exhibition its name. Für Theresia not only paints a picture of Bruckner's relationships with women, but also asks about female roles during Bruckner's lifetime and opens up many a fresh perspective on his life and work. On International Women's Day 2024, the show will make its first stop on its tour with the Poxrucker Sisters at the Brucknerhaus Linz.

Hallucination is a new production of Anton Bruckner's 1868 composition Erinnerung that combines artificial intelligence, live music, performance, song, holographic laser projections, and light - to create a new, sensory level of perception that blends classical, contemporary art, and avant-garde.
The resurrection of this Bruckner work in a musical-performative-visual dream world is provided by artist, composer, singer and music producer Crystn Hunt Akron together with intermedia artist Chris Noelle-who designs the visualization-and Ali Nikrang, who works as a composer, artist and key researcher at the Ars Electronica Futurelab.
The art makes use of artificial intelligence: it generates a piece that represents a kind of memory of memory and is rearranged and remixed.

What culinary preferences might Anton Bruckner have had on a Sunday morning during Advent?
This year, the students and teachers of the Jazz/Pop/Rock classes of the Landesmusikschule Kirchdorf will explore this question. There will be music appropriate to the season, but not only ... and perhaps a Christmas song by Bruckner ... jazzed up? One may be curious!

At night, the Bruckner organ is still played by the spirit of Bruckner. But one day, three of the organ pipes decide not to stay any longer, and they set off to seek their fortune in the world. Bruckner's ghost is in despair, for how can he continue to play without the entire scale? A solution must be found, someone must recapture the escaped pipes. At this moment, the saving idea comes to him: Kasperl should catch the pipes so that the organ has its full range of sounds available again!
