Programme:
- Set Anton Bruckner meal at Marktwirt Derfler from 11:00
- Ennstal choirs' project, Locus iste at 15:00
- Schorgel (home-made organ) (already from Pentecost Sunday, 19 May, 2024 from 15:00 to 19:00 and on Pentecost Monday, 20 May, 2024 from 11:00 to 15:00)

There is a set Anton Bruckner meal at the Marktwirt Derfler, as the artist stopped at this inn several times with his friend, the music director of Steyr,  Franz Bayer, and stayed here overnight. Anton Bruckner was put on a diet by his doctor and was then no longer allowed to order a "hearty" meal, but his companion was. And so, it happened that Anton Bruckner ate up all the smoked meat with semolina dumplings and sauerkraut on his companion's plate.

Small, fine exhibition with works of art by Otmar Wallenta on the subject of Anton Bruckner and a limited special print "Bruckner in Ternberg" with a Bruckner silver coin included.

Bruckner's contrapuntal masterpiece
Günter Wand (1912-2002), one of the most accomplished Bruckner connoisseurs and interpreters, considered his Fifth Symphony (alongside the Ninth) to be one of the composer's most "authentic" symphonies. In this music, "where Bruckner's distance from the world becomes clearer than anywhere else", he shows himself to be "totally uninfluenced" by any role models or whisperers. Posterity occasionally gave the work, which its creator himself had never heard played by an orchestra, strange epithets or descriptions such as the "Symphony of Faith" or "Catholic". Bruckner himself referred to his Fifth as the "Fantastic" or his "contrapuntal masterpiece". For a long time, the symphony remained in the repertoire in an arrangement by Franz Schalk, in which it also experienced its mutilated premiere. (It was even performed again and again in this form at the Wiener Konzerthaus until the end of the 1980s). Today, however, Bruckner's original idea has prevailed, and of course only original voice material is used in the concerts of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra conducted by Lahav Shani.

Following the dissolution of the monastery by Joseph II in 1786, the organ built by Franz Xaver Chrisman in the collegiate church of Engelhartszell was brought to Linz to the Old Cathedral. The organ was then completed and expanded by Anton Bruckner according to his plans. This historical event is the starting point for "Reflections on Bruckner". At the start there are original works by Bruckner for the organ and trombone, which finally lead on to improvisations.

In honour of the 200th anniversary of Anton Bruckner's birth, the entire town of Vöcklabruck will be the setting for a colourful festival on 1 and 2 June, 2024 - the VöcklaBRUCKNERfest 2024.

On 2 June, 2024, the Vöcklabruck City Orchestra will conclude the VöcklaBRUCKNERfest with a matinee and Bruckner's 6th Symphony in A major. From 8.30 there will be the opportunity for a Licht&i-BRUCKNER breakfast in the foyer of the town hall.

Anton Bruckner (1824-1896): Symphony No. 6 in A major
1st movement: Maestoso
2nd movement: Adagio. Very ceremonious
3rd movement: Scherzo. Not fast
4th movement: Finale. Moving, but not too fast

Symphony No. 6 in A major was completed by Anton Bruckner in 1879 and parts of it were very controversial. The very first performances were therefore often played in shortened and altered versions.
The first print was in part severely flawed and so no critical editions of the work were available for a long time. In fact it was over 50 years before Paul van Kempen performed the original version for the first time in Dresden in 1935. The 6th Symphony opens the series of the great, late symphonic works. It is as a whole lighter and more cheerful and is neither longer nor more complicated in structure than the 5th Symphony. The logic in the development of the themes is admirable; despite their contrasting nature, they are related to one another. This artful interweaving of the themes through combinatorial-motivic work creates a spiritual unity in this work in terms of the context of its movements, which marks a newly accomplished level in Bruckner's mastery in an impressive manner.

We are addressed wordlessly by symphonic music and in the same way by dance. And yet in the former, art is expressed merely audibly and in the latter, predominantly visibly. Approaching Anton Bruckner's 9th Symphony, for Compositional transfer inbodied "I ANTON" we worked on a translation method with the help of which musical structures can be brought from the time filled with sounds into the space filled with movements. Thus, this performance does not merely dance to the music or its mood, but rather repeats its forms even in the physical realm, and even attempts to dance with Anton beyond the unfinished end by means of the movements that develop from it.

The striking similarity between a recurring theme from Bruckner's Fifth Symphony and a guitar riff by the White Stripes - in their song, the Seven Nation Army - is the godmother of this ten-piece electric guitar ensemble. In this field of tension between high culture, popular culture and avant-garde, the collective dedicates itself to this very riff. In essence, this is less a case of "stealing the stolen" or an act of appropriation but rather a recuperation. Experimental surfaces of sound encounter incisive repetitions of the Bruckner riff in variations and with subtle shifts. The result is a a monstrous sound aesthetic, a hybrid of Anton Bruckner, the White Stripes and the loud electric guitar symphonist, Glenn Branca.

"A storm of enthusiasm was unleashed like an elemental force," Hugo Wolf reported following the premiere of the 8th Symphony, which took place on 18 December, 1892 at the Vienna Musikverein (Music Association). Hans Richter conducted the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and it seemed as if Anton Bruckner was on a creative roll: His 7th Symphony had been enthusiastically received at every new venue since its premiere in Leipzig in 1884. What's more his "Eighth" was premiered by the very orchestra that had ridiculed him at an audition for his 3rd Symphony.

And yet things did not seem to come that easily to him. The "Eighth" was actually finished in 1887 and Bruckner - unlike with his previous works - was even satisfied with the result. "May it find favour," he noted in his diary. But his contemporaries were once again overwhelmed and had a completely different opinion. Hermann Levi, the conductor of the "Tristan" premiere and a confidante of Bruckner, had his doubts and could not identify with it: the instrumentation did not suit him and overall it was too similar to the 7th Symphony. Bruckner went right back to his desk and gave it a thorough overhaul.

And this revamp was definitely worth it! Not only was Hugo Wolf delighted, but the entire audience in the Great Hall of the Vienna Musikverein went wild with enthusiasm. After each movement, Bruckner was asked to come on stage where he received three huge laurel wreaths. These storms of enthusiasm continue to this day and it will be interesting to see in what way Markus Poschner and "his" Bruckner Orchestra Linz will interpret this work.

The premiere of Anton Bruckner's 7th Symphony took place in Leipzig on 30 November, 1884 by 29-year-old Arthur Nikisch. The date is very memorable as sixty-year-old Anton Bruckner was celebrating a long-awaited success. In March 1885, the Munich premiere by Hermann Levi was a triumph: "Bruckner is a genius", "Finally, finally someone who draws on unlimited resources", "The symphony stands before us as an imperishable work of musical architecture." Bruckner must have been amazed when he read these reviews. Today, the Seventh is one of his  most frequently performed  symphonies. Bruckner dedicated it to the "fairytale king" of Bavaria, Ludwig II, the eccentric monarch who preferred to have himself portrayed as the swan knight, Lohengrin, and financed Wagner's lofty plans.

The great Austrian theologian and thinker, Paul Zulehner, takes the floor before the performance and gets the audience in the right mood with a "Spiritual Miniature".

Important info

The date planned for June 12 must be postponed to June 19. This change in date also means a change in content: The well-known ZIB anchorman and author Tarek Leitner will be in conversation with Norbert Trawöger about Bruckner. Musical surprises are to be expected!

Bruckner!

Norbert Trawöger 's passion for Anton Bruckner took hold of him at the tender age of eight and never let go. In his published by Residenz Verlag, "Bruckner! Journal of a Passion" published by Residenz Verlag, he talks with relish about his experiences with Bruckner and his music, warns against confusing the creator and the work - even if they are confusingly similar in some respects - and encounters turtles, songs such as "Seven Nation Army", a celebrated rock star, floating organs and a pious extremist. Above all, however, his expedition leads him into giant caves of symphonic proportions. Norbert Trawöger is an inspiring deduster, draws connections to the present, shares his eternal enthusiasm for the wonder of music and reminds us that art is an indispensable companion of our human existence. Trawöger, who comes from Bad Schallerbach, is Artistic Director of the Bruckner Orchestra Linz and Artistic Director of the first Upper Austrian CULTURE Expo Anton Bruckner 2024.

Tarek Leitner presents Austria's most-watched news program, "Zeit im Bild". For almost two decades, he has stood for reliable daily information from Austria and the world. He has won the "TV-Romy" audience award three times for his work. He began his journalistic career at the ORF regional studio in Linz. ORF's cooperation at the time with the "Linzer Klangwolke" created an affinity for this composer and, above all, a love of the "Romantic" during a performance of Bruckner's 4th Symphony. It was also this work that shaped his personal prelude to the Bruckner Year 2024: together with the Bruckner Orchestra Linz and Markus Poschner, he created two inspiring evenings at the Musikverein in Vienna and the Musiktheater Linz. As an author, Leitner is also intensively involved with the development of building culture in our country. He has published several books on this subject. With his book "Berlin - Linz", he embarked on a journey of discovery through contemporary history.

On 3 September, 1881, Anton Bruckner completed his 6th Symphony in St. Florian. He himself was never to actually hear the complete premiere of this work. In the Mondsee Basilica, Bruckner's music contrasts with Liszt's last symphonic poem "From the Cradle to the Grave" (written in Rome in the same year, in 1881). This is one of the late works of the master, characterised by the fact it fades away and by its intensity.

Grief has many different sounds. It can sound fragile and full of empathy such as in Alban Berg's Violin Concerto, or solemn and intoxicating, such as in Anton Bruckner's Seventh Symphony. Berg composed his only violin concerto in the aftermath of the death of Alma Mahler's daughter, the 18-year-old Manon Gropius. The fact that a consistently 12-tone composition can sound so "romantic" also fascinates Latvian violinist, Baiba Skride, who assumes the solo part in Berg's concerto dedicated to the memory of an angel. The news of Richard Wagner's death had a strong impact on Bruckner's conception of his "Seventh": the death of his great role model prompted Bruckner to reinterpret the symphony's Adagio as a "Requiem" for Richard Wagner and to compose it as a poignant lamentation for the dead. ANDRIS NELSONS, a Bruckner specialist from the younger generation of conductors, is on the podium.

The orchestra Camerata Medica Wien is conducted by Nicolas Radulescu
Anton Bruckner Symphony No. 4 in E flat major ("Romantic"), WAB 104 2nd version, 1878/1880

Nicolas Radulescu was born in Vienna. After being impressed by the Bruckner performances of Sergiu Celibidache, he received his first conducting lessons from his father, the conductor, composer and organist, Michael Radulescu. He studied early music and applied musicology and completed his conducting studies with Martin Sieghart, former chief conductor of the Linz Bruckner Orchestra, at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz in 2006. In the course of his concert career, he has performed in renowned concert halls such as the Musikverein and Konzerthaus in Vienna, the Salzburg Mozarteum and the Amsterdam Concertgebouw: He has also worked with well-known soloists and orchestras. Known for promoting young musicians, his work focuses on Anton Bruckner. This has led him to become a consultant for the new Bruckner edition published by the Wiener Musikwissenschaftliche Verlag. Nicolas Radulescu currently conducts the Camerata Medica Vienna, the Lyra Vienna Chamber Orchestra and teaches music history and historical performance practice. Nicolas Radulescu has lived in Bad Kreuzen since 2023.

The Camerata Medica Wien is a non-profit orchestra association currently consisting of 62 musicians: The members are in the main from the medical and pharmaceutical professions and many of them have professional musical training. One of the aims of the association is to revive the tradition of the "Vienna Doctors' Orchestra", which dates back to the early 20th century.
In spring 2004, the Viennese orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. Martin Donner, brought this tradition back to life by founding the Camerata Medica Wien.
Originally founded as a chamber orchestra, the orchestra, under the direction of the Viennese conductor, Nicolas Radulescu, has segued to become one that can also include larger symphonic works in its repertoire. Every year, three new complete programmes are developed and presented to the public.
On its 20th anniversary, Camerata Medica Wien can look back on 50 successful concert events, including numerous charity concerts.

Further information on ticket sales will be announced shortly under "Details & Tickets".

In the animated film made by the artist, Ingrid Gaier, the hairs escape from their place in the museum. They dance to the music of the Italian sound artist, Isabella Forciniti, and play tricks on Anton Bruckner's bald head. Symphonic music affects us without words as does dance. In the former, art is expressed as a sound and in the latter, art is predominantly visible. Approaching Anton Bruckner's 9th Symphony, for Compositional transfer inbodied "I ANTON " we worked on a method of translation which should help musical structures to shift from a space filled with sound to a space filled with movement. This performance does not just dance to the music or its mood, rather it repeats its forms even in the physical realm, and even attempts to dance with Anton beyond the unfinished end through the movements which develop from this.

The Bamberg Symphony Orchestra with its honorary conductor, Herbert Blomstedt, will perform again at the Upper Austrian Abbey Concerts following its last appearance in 2017. The programme includes Anton Bruckner's 9th Symphony - unfinished and dedicated to "the good Lord". We are also celebrating the 97th birthday of an expert in Bruckner, Herbert Blomstedt, on the actual day. There is probably no more fitting setting for this special occasion than the Basilica of St. Florian's Abbey.

On the occasion of Anton Bruckner's 200th birthday, the ÖKF Brussels is cooperating with an organ festival partner in Belgium who will, by request, host a special organ recital with works by Anton Bruckner. Klaus Sonnleitner, organist of the Augustinian monastery of St. Florian, has been engaged for the concert. The evening will be moderated by a musicologist from Ghent.

Anton Bruckner Scherzo from the "Study Symphony" WAB 99 (1863) 1824-1896
Andante from the "Zeroth Symphony" WAB 100 (1869) (arrangement by Erwin Horn)

During Bruckner's time as cathedral and parish organist in Linz, Bruckner, influenced by his lessons with the theater conductor, Otto Kitzler., composed the Symphony in F minor, later called the "Study Symphony", and the First Symphony WAB 101.
Shortly after moving to Vienna, he composed the "annulled" symphony WAB 100, which was later discarded. Prelude in C major WAB 129 ("Perger Präludium"). This short piece for harmonium was composed on 20 August 1884 during a stay at St. Florian Abbey for his friend, Josef Diernhofer, a leather merchant and the mayor of Perg.
Bruckner also used it himself as a starting point for improvisations. It is also played in this concert.

Improvisation Themes:
Motet "Locus iste" WAB 23 (1869) 5th Symphony WAB 105 (completed 1877/78)
Te Deum WAB 45 (completed 1884) Improvisation Performance of  Bruckner's improvisation sketch of 31.7.1890 for the wedding of the Emperor's daughter , the Archduchess Marie Valerie, in Bad Ischl (themes: Finale of the 1st Symphony, "Hallelujah" by George Frideric Handel and the Emperor's Hymn).
Bad Ischl was the summer residence of Emperor Franz Josef I and Bruckner regularly played the organ on imperial occasions, e.g. on the emperor's birthday on 18 August. The large organ built by the Mauracher company (1908/10, 65 stops, far removed) bears the name "Kaiserjubiläumsorgel" (Emperor's anniversary organ).

Josef Steger, who was Bruckner's friend and hairdresser in Steyr, collected Bruckner's hair, which ended up in glass medallions that can be found in the Nordico Linz and in the Town Museum of Steyr, among other places. In the animated film made by the artist, Ingrid Gaier, the hairs escape from their place in the museum. They dance to the music of the Italian sound artist, Isabella Forciniti, and play tricks on Anton Bruckner's bald head. The film raises questions about collective memory and which mementos go towards shaping it.

There will be music by Anton Bruckner in the forest near Oppolz and at 11.30 a.m. the highlight will be the Windhaag Mass, which he composed in 1842 in the Maria Schnee pilgrimage church.

The pilgrimage starts at 7:20 am in Mairspindt and leads directly to the neighboring Czech Republic. Do not forget your passport

7 artists print lithographs from stone thus creating their own personal reference to Anton Bruckner.

Unlike in the past - in the 18th century in the days of the inventor, Senefelder, when artists and printers were only ever male - or even in Anton Bruckner's lifetime, printed matter was printed by men. It was only later that Käthe Kolwitz, as the only exception among artists, became an artistic role model presenting a strong statement in her lithographs.
Today, female artists are in the majority, even in physically difficult and elaborate old printing techniques, such as lithography according to Senefelder.
This beautiful, special technique has not become obsolete even without the digital simplification of the press.

During the symposiumyou can look over the artists' shoulders every day from 15 - 21 August 2024.

Anton Bruckner: Symphony No. IX & excerpts from the surviving final fragments

The master began his IX. Symphony in 1887. Weakened by his heart disease from 1890 onwards, he worked tirelessly on his last composition. The first three movements are complete. Since its premiere in 1903, the work has mostly been performed in this three-movement form and is therefore known to the music world as "unfinished". Bruckner spent the last three years of his life - repeatedly interrupted by bouts of illness - working on the finale of the  IX Symphony. The piece was already very advanced in terms of sketches and elaboration and still he was unable to complete it. Only fragments of the composition have survived and it is therefore only known to a few listeners. Although it has occasionally been played by a third hand in an attempt to supplement and complete it, notes and passages in Bruckner's own hand have never been performed without later additions by others. In the first part of the symphony concert, which was moderated by Prof. Felix Diergarten (CH), some of the most important authentic fragments that originate exclusively from Bruckner's hand will be heard for the first time - naturally in fragmentary blocks. Bruckner takes on a completely new and visionary tonal language, which even surpasses the modernity of the 3rd movement. After the compositional look at the last final fragments, the entire IX. Symphony will be performed in its three surviving movements.
