David Wagner on Tour

Kick-off for "Wagner cycles Bruckner" - Linz-based musician and composer on the road in Bruckner country

It is certainly one of the most dynamic projects of the OÖ KulturEXPO Anton Bruckner 2024. The musician and composer, David Wagner, gets on his bike and visits the inhabitants of Bruckner streets, alleys, paths and squares throughout Upper Austria to make music with them. There he collects sound donations of short motifs from the 9 Bruckner symphonies on video and creates a 9-minute music film from them.

Governor Thomas Stelzer and David Wagner in conversation

On 11 April 2024, the starting signal was sounded for the 1,700 km tour through Upper Austria. The Governor, Thomas Stelzer, was in attendance: "David Wagner is a reliable constant in the Upper Austrian cultural scene and always manages to combine humour and high culture in his projects, which alternate between music, cabaret and improvisational art. The participatory aspect of 'Wagner cycles Bruckner' is particularly appealing because, on the one hand, it reminds us of Anton Bruckner as a person, and on the other hand, it brings him back to the places from where he became a world-famous composer."

From Linz, David Wagner will undertake seven extensive tours in April and May 2024, and – like Anton Bruckner once did – he will embark completely non-motorized, equipped only with a helmet camera and  a field microphone. The approximately 60 streets and squares in Upper Austria named after Bruckner are supplemented by locations such as Bruckner 's place of birth, the Anton Bruckner Private University, the Bruckner Orchestra Linz in the Musiktheater am Volksgarten and others. This amounts to a total of 72 musical stations.

Some of the fellow musicians were found in advance and provided with simple sheet music. In the summer, sound will be added to the material collected in the recording studio and this will then be edited into a 9-minute film in the film studio, in which all of the residents from the Upper Austrian Bruckner sites iwho took part can be seen and heard making music.
