Now it begins!

The New Year's Concert with the Bruckner Orchestra Linz under its principal conductor Markus Poschner at the Brucknerhaus Linz is a good old tradition. In this country, however, tradition and innovation often go hand in hand. That's why this concert celebrates not only the local jubilarian Anton Bruckner, but also Smetana, Janáček, Schoenberg and Ives, all of whom are celebrating round birthdays. The anniversary year will be officially opened with a dance program of a special kind.

The detailed program will be announced at a later date.

Anton Bruckner, the famous, modest composer, musician, teacher: what made this man, who always persevered despite hard trials? Where did he get the strength to follow his idea, to create his music? What did loneliness do to him? These are questions and themes that, in a different guise, also confront many young people today. A musical and lively puppet theater piece for two great actresses and a very small orchestra full of oddities and surprises goes on a search for clues, uncovers many a little secret and dares to find answers.

Exactly 50 years to the day after its opening, the Brucknerhaus Linz is celebrating the half-century of its existence with a grand concert. The Viennese Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Zubin Mehta, will play a fitting and monumental 'birthday serenade' in the form of Anton Bruckner's Symphony No. 7 in E major, which he completed one day after his 59th birthday in St. Florian and which was premiered in Leipzig on December 30, 1884. As his ninth symphonic work, it finally brought Bruckner his long-awaited breakthrough as an internationally recognized composer. The symphony also brought good fortune to the concert hall named after him on the Danube: it was performed, at that time also by the Vienna Philharmonic and conducted by Herbert von Karajan, on March 23, 1974, as part of the festive concert celebrating the opening of the Brucknerhaus Linz.

Franz Welser-Möst is undoubtedly one of the great conductors of our time at the helm of the Upper Austrian Youth Symphony Orchestra. Just like Anton Bruckner, he also struck his first musical roots in Upper Austria.

This is also the case now with the young musicians of the Upper Austrian Youth Symphony Orchestra, which is an orchestra of the Upper Austrian State Music School. This common musical breeding ground is the starting point for a special series of four concerts in which the young musicians and Franz Welser-Möst dedicate themselves to the genius loci - Anton Bruckner.

Anton Bruckner himself was a sanger boy in St. Florian. In Bruckner's time, however, there were only a total of three boys, who were involved in the liturgy mainly at the church services. Today the choir numbers almost 45 boys and is supported by a male choir (almost exclusively former members of the Sangerknaben) - an extraordinary sound experience. On May 4, 2024, the feast of St. Florian (patron saint of the province and diocese of Upper Austria), the St. Florian Boys' Choir, together with the Linz Music High School, will perform Anton Bruckner's Mass in E minor during the Pontifical Mass.

A musical genius between rejection and recognition
Bruckner Forever!
Nordico Linz

September 2024 - February 2025
Nordico City Museum Linz

Anton Bruckner is not just a local phenomenon in Upper Austria, but a world-renowned and recognized great as a musician. Who was this man, in whose honor an entire year is proclaimed in Linz and Upper Austria 200 years after his birth?

The exhibition embarks on a journey into Bruckner's past, exploring the set pieces that remain or have emerged over time and placing them in new contexts. Between provincial dust and the big city, we encounter an introverted nerd, an unrecognized genius and his search for love. The life and work of the musical genius is illuminated as well as critically questioned from today's perspective. Views, original artifacts and documents, as well as contemporary visualizations shed new light on a
great musician. In six themed rooms, the story of Bruckner is retold and made tangible.

Today is finally the day: we are celebrating the 200th birthday of Anton Bruckner on all fronts. In the morning, the Bruckner Orchestra Linz and Markus Poschner will celebrate in the Basilica of St. Florian with world-famous vocal soloists.
with world-famous vocal soloists; exciting educational events in the exhibitions and workshops on the person and work of Bruckner, an evening concert with the Cleveland Orchestra and Franz Welser-Möst in his birthplace Ansfelden and much more are on the program. 24 is therefore not only the year, but also the number of hours in which Bruckner will be celebrated on this day!

Anton Bruckner's symphonies are today undisputedly among the summit works of the 19th century. Admittedly, we have become accustomed to hearing them performed on modern instruments whose sound does not correspond to the intentions of their creator. Bruckner wrote for string instruments with gut strings, which are both softer sounding and more blendable, and from 1868 decidedly for Viennese woodwind and brass instruments, whose colors were different from those we know from today's instruments. The result is a completely different overall sound that casts Bruckner's music in a new light.

For the first time in the world, all eleven of Bruckner's symphonies will be performed in their original sound as part of the International Bruckner Festival Linz 2024, a journey of discovery in eleven concerts that can only be heard as a cycle at the Brucknerhaus Linz and there exclusively in Austria. The symphonies are always performed in their first version and thus in the form that Bruckner originally intended to give to each work, still unimpressed by the reactions of his fellow musicians. They are combined with compositions that owe their genesis to a similar impulse or were of exemplary importance to Bruckner, and they are performed by eleven of Europe's most renowned original sound orchestras under the direction of renowned conductors.

A unique listening experience that only the Bruckner city of Linz has to offer in the Bruckner Year 2024.

Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy was a kind of contemporary classicist in the first decades of Anton Bruckner's work and as such had a lasting influence on the orchestral works from his student days, in which echoes of the theme and instrumentation of the Hebrides Overture can be found, for example. The Symphony No. 3 in A minor, which became popular under the epithet "Scottish," on the other hand, was known to Bruckner at least from the concert hall.

His own highly individual symphonic style is first documented by Bruckner's Symphony No. 1 in C minor, premiered in Linz in 1868, with which the composer, already over 40 years of age, set out into new worlds and confidently entered the musical field that was avowedly the most important for him: that of symphonic music. When he subjected the work to a fundamental revision beginning in 1890, resulting in its "Viennese version," which theViennaPhilharmonic Orchestra launched on December 13, 1891, he affectionately and jokingly referred to it as his "saucy Beserl.

Lentos Art Museum Linz
October 2024 - January 2025

Anton Bruckner and choral music are closely connected. As the composer of numerous ecclesiastical as well as secular choral pieces, Anton Bruckner is an indispensable part of the musical repertoire of any choir.

The Lentos is dedicated to this aspect of Bruckner's work from the perspective of contemporary art. To this end, the exhibition brings together around 20 national and international positions for which singing together forms an elementary point of reference. The works shown take up singing in its most diverse levels of meaning: as an expression of one's own identity, as a possibility of intercultural exchange, as a means of (political) protest, or as a community-building practice within contemporary societies.

Videos, sound installations and performative projects are presented to visitors in an attractive exhibition architecture, inviting them to explore the role of communal singing in the context of contemporary art.

Ina Regen, charismatic singer-songwriter from Grieskirchen, Amadeus Award winner and one of the weightiest Upper Austrian musicians of our time, is embarking on a year-long search for talents with drive and convincing song material. Conceived as an exclusive, ten-part concert series from January to October 2024 in and with Linz's Posthof, the journey promises plenty of surprising and new things in terms of female pop culture on top of that. Ina Regen asks the question whether "Next Bruckner" might not just as well be female. Each of the ten evenings provides a different exciting answer. The big final concert with Ina Regen & Friends in November marks the end of an exciting series and the hopeful beginning of something new at the same time.
