Theresia Helm, Anton Bruckner's mother, was born in 1801 in Neuzeug at 28 Theresia-Helm-Straße. She grew up in a wealthy home in Neuzeug.
Her parents owned large parcels of land and her father also received an income in his capacity as administrator of the Gschwendt estate,
as well as the income from the inn. They were also entitled to work as knife makers and publishers.
So on his mother's side, Anton Bruckner is a genuine 'Sierninger - Neuzeuger'.
Anton Bruckner later returned to the inn, which is now the Landhotel Forsthof, again and again and once dedicated the song Die Rose to the daughter of the hotel, whom he greatly admired.
He was also a founding member of the Liedertafel Sierninghofen-Neuzeug singing group, which is still based at Restaurant Landerl and holds weekly choir rehearsals, provided those attending are able to sing.
Anton Bruckner was also the author of the singers' motto.

The opening of the exhibition with the Hausruckviertler Kunstkreis (Hausruck Art Group) will take place on 10.05.24 at 18:00 at the municipal office. You can visit the exhibition during the opening hours of the municipality or by prior registration by phoning 07252 2255-0 or registering by mail: Registration

2 guided tours are available:

- Sierning: on the trail of Anton Bruckner, his love and his contemporaries in Sierning
The tour includes the Landhotel Forsthof, the castle and the church. The Forsthof, where he was in love with the daughter, is almost certainly where he also met Josef Werndl and Anton Landerl, one of Sierning's greatest patrons (financing the hospital and the high altar in the parish church).
He enthusiastically played Marian hymns on the organ in the church for his great love, Bruckner was often invited to the castle by the owner, Baroness Sophie von Karst.

- Sierninghofen/Neuzeug: tracing the footsteps of Theresia Bruckner (née Helm) and Bruckner's friends in Neuzeug
Here the focus is, on the one hand, on Theresia Helm, Anton Bruckner's mother, who was born in Neuzeug.
On the other hand, Anton Bruckner had good friends in Neuzeug, such as Carl Almeroth (cutler in Steyr and Neuzeug) and also had good contacts with the local Liedertafel singing group. He came up with their foundation motto and also took part in the rehearsals.

The tours can be booked individually and last for about 2 hours.
The price is € 10.00 per person for up to 10 participants and €  7.00 per person for 11 persons and more,
or group prices by arrangement. In Sierning a visit to the exhibition is included in the price of the guided tour.

Anton Bruckner felt at home in St. Florian Abbey where he was a choirboy. He was taught here and later taught himself. He also played the organ on the "Krismannin" in the collegiate church. In this place of the world, he searched for his own identity as an artist. He also returned here for good on his very last journey. At the abbey, for the very first time, the Upper Austrian KulturEXPO Anton Bruckner 2024 exhibition showcases the various stages of the composer's life and work. It features a large number of documents from the abbey's archives. Three monumental pavilions in the abbey courtyard invite visitors to experience Bruckner's dreams and visions for themeselves through exciting multimedia presentations.

The immersive sound space "Being Anton" at the Ars Electronica Center in Linz offers visitors the opportunity to explore Bruckner's world of sound in a completely new way. After all, when we think of Anton Bruckner, we usually think of his legacy, i.e. Bruckner's music and his sounds. But what soundscape surrounded Bruckner himself? What did he listen to in his everyday life? His life was characterized by many social upheavals triggered by the industrial revolution. The steam engine, for example, which was used in steam trains and steamships, not only changed people's mobility options at an unprecedented pace, but also brought a completely new soundscape into the world.
The installation "Being Anton", developed by the Ars Electronica Futurelab, allows visitors to immerse themselves in this world of sound that surrounded Anton Bruckner and his contemporaries. The link with examples from Bruckner's musical oeuvre creates points of contact between the two sound worlds.

The special exhibition deals, among other things, with the historical documents that record Anton Bruckner's relationship with Perg.

A fragmentary account is given of the ways in which the musician, Anton Bruckner, was honoured in Perg in the decades following his death through the naming of a street, the hanging of a memorial plaque, in specialist lectures or as part of church tours. An annual programme, which accompanies the exhibition, is directed at the inhabitants of the town and district of Perg inviting them to visit the exhibition.

Perg is Bruckner's town because
- Anton Bruckner's great-grandmother was the daughter of a millstone cutter from Perg
- Bruckner had personal friends or was acquainted with several people from Perg (in particular the Mayor, Karl Terpinitz, and the schoolmaster, Kirchhofer) and Anton Bruckner was thus commissioned to build a new organ in the parish church of Perg,
- Anton Bruckner dedicated the Perg Prelude to the leather goods' merchant, Josef Diernhofer,
- Anton Bruckner set the Liedertafel motto to music written by the Pergkirchen priest, Andreas Mittermayr.

Bruckner embroidery is a participatory art project in the form of collective embroidery. Participants meet in small groups to embroider a fragment of a Bruckner score.

Everyone is welcome to join in the embroidery! No technical knowledge is required. It's not about embroidering "correctly" but about how everyone does it in their own way: experimental, rough, precise, nervous, wild, calm...

The embroidery meetings take place at various locations in Upper Austria: on a market square, in a music school, in an inn, at a lake, in a private apartment, during a music rehearsal.

While the hands are busy, the conversations can free themselves. Just as the motif continues to be embroidered by all those involved, the stories continue to unfold. Meeting by meeting - note by note - stitch by stitch, the entire embroidery grows as the sum of each individual handwriting and personality.

This meeting place is not barrier-free ! The café staff will be happy to help you overcome the two steps at the entrance.
Registration requested!

Further embroidery meetings will follow.

Bruckner as part of the club scene? In April, the STREAM CLUB and state music students studying digital music production proved that this is possible. And the beat goes on: "It all started with the idea of creating new approaches to Anton Bruckner's classical music," Ilona Roth from Transitheart Productions explains. The latter is a label for artistic  productions in the field of contemporary dance and theatre with interfaces to performance art, film and video. Together with the Linz-based collective Holy Hydra, she has devised Bruckner's Beats and presents pieces by Bruckner featuring electronic remixes and new arrangements in a club atmosphere. Sound installations, performances, art happenings and interventions - Anton Bruckner becomes danceable and tangible.

The Experimental Sound-Focused Experimental Arrangement (organ performance) combines organic and inorganic sounds. During the live performance, which is tuned to the sacred space, the audience is evoked a mood that is both melancholic and optimistic. Based on the works of Anton Bruckner, E:K:V will reinterpret the classical pieces with electronic sounds and organ sounds. A performative sound journey with remixes of Bruckner's sounds will expand the framework. Dancers and performers from Transitheart Productions will interact with Bruckner remixes and enable an immersive dive into their live improvisation.

We are addressed wordlessly by symphonic music and in the same way by dance. And yet in the former, art is expressed merely audibly and in the latter, predominantly visibly. Approaching Anton Bruckner's 9th Symphony, for Compositional transfer inbodied "I ANTON" we worked on a translation method with the help of which musical structures can be brought from the time filled with sounds into the space filled with movements. Thus, this performance does not merely dance to the music or its mood, but rather repeats its forms even in the physical realm, and even attempts to dance with Anton beyond the unfinished end by means of the movements that develop from it.

"A storm of enthusiasm was unleashed like an elemental force," Hugo Wolf reported following the premiere of the 8th Symphony, which took place on 18 December, 1892 at the Vienna Musikverein (Music Association). Hans Richter conducted the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and it seemed as if Anton Bruckner was on a creative roll: His 7th Symphony had been enthusiastically received at every new venue since its premiere in Leipzig in 1884. What's more his "Eighth" was premiered by the very orchestra that had ridiculed him at an audition for his 3rd Symphony.

And yet things did not seem to come that easily to him. The "Eighth" was actually finished in 1887 and Bruckner - unlike with his previous works - was even satisfied with the result. "May it find favour," he noted in his diary. But his contemporaries were once again overwhelmed and had a completely different opinion. Hermann Levi, the conductor of the "Tristan" premiere and a confidante of Bruckner, had his doubts and could not identify with it: the instrumentation did not suit him and overall it was too similar to the 7th Symphony. Bruckner went right back to his desk and gave it a thorough overhaul.

And this revamp was definitely worth it! Not only was Hugo Wolf delighted, but the entire audience in the Great Hall of the Vienna Musikverein went wild with enthusiasm. After each movement, Bruckner was asked to come on stage where he received three huge laurel wreaths. These storms of enthusiasm continue to this day and it will be interesting to see in what way Markus Poschner and "his" Bruckner Orchestra Linz will interpret this work.

As part of this musical reading, Monika Holzmann will read a selection of Anton Bruckner's letters from the years 1852 to 1896.

The musical part is an arranged version of the Windhaag Mass, Missa Brevis, composed by Anto Bruckner in the year 1842 when he was a teacher in Windhaag near Freistadt.
The original version is composed for an alto voice, the organ and for 2 horn parts. Angela Dobretsberger has arranged the instrumental parts for the  accordion. The relationship between the music and the text is very special.

The striking similarity between a recurring theme from Bruckner's Fifth Symphony and a guitar riff by the White Stripes - in their song, the Seven Nation Army - is the godmother of this ten-piece electric guitar ensemble. In this field of tension between high culture, popular culture and avant-garde, the collective dedicates itself to this very riff. In essence, this is less a case of "stealing the stolen" or an act of appropriation but rather a recuperation. Experimental surfaces of sound encounter incisive repetitions of the Bruckner riff in variations and with subtle shifts. The result is a a monstrous sound aesthetic, a hybrid of Anton Bruckner, the White Stripes and the loud electric guitar symphonist, Glenn Branca.

David Wagner is collecting audio donations of short motifs from the 9 Bruckner symphonies on video from the residents of the streets, alleys, paths and squares throughout Upper Austria once frequented by Bruckner. He is using them to create a 9-minute compilation of footage that depicts a representative cross-section of Bruckner's creative symphonic work. He has the support of a randomly generated cross-section of the population from the entire state of Upper-Austria.

In this way 72 short videos are produced. The actual "performance" is filmed as is the journey itself, making contact with the people, the rehearsals and various "making of" scenes. These are then edited to make a film which also lasts for around 9 minutes.

Just like Anton Bruckner, David Wagner navigates his way through the countryside without the need for an engine. With a velocipede as his means of transport, he reaches all of the 72 stations on his Bruckner Road Tour without generating any CO2 thus ensuring that the spirit of Bruckner, which still hovers above the land above the River Enns, remains undisturbed by  pollutants .

David Wagner is also happy to have fellow cyclists along for the ride, who make one or two of the 1,500 kilometers through Upper Austria easier for him.

This is a place where everything takes infinitely long, it is infinitely quiet, a place where mystery is strong. In this enchanted glade, the ten symphonies of Anton Bruckner resonate 666 times longer. A pause of one sole minute in Bruckner's music becomes a silence of eleven hours and six minutes. The rustling of the leaves, birdsong, the creaking of trees and the horns of distant ships are the real sound of Bruckner, namely the sound for him.

Further information on the exhibition, tickets, educationalal programme and barrier-free access can be found here:

This device combines organ playing and an ensemble of adapted  playground equipment in a move to create a collective musical instrument in a public space. Different organ pipes are operated by swinging them and bobbing them up and down - this creates an acoustic space in the organ playground that makes Anton Bruckner audible and tangible in both an abstract and playful way.
The SCHORGEL will be set up in various Bruckner-related locations in 2024.

The SCHORGEL is coming to Wels!
The organ playground can be experienced as part of the: International Wels Puppet Theatre Festival
