The press conference on 23 November 2023 at the Musiktheater Linz kicked off the Bruckner Year 2024 with a preview of the upcoming highlights: with a "Tremolo" in December and the New Year's Concert at the Brucknerhaus Linz, we are starting the first trimester of the anniversary year in style.

The OÖ KulturEXPO Anton Bruckner 2024 will work with many partners, first and foremost the City of Linz, to highlight the lasting significance of Anton Bruckner's impressive work through a wide range of exhibitions, concerts and events in all regions of the state.

The first Upper Austrian KulturEXPO will be launched on 1 January 2024 to mark the 200th anniversary of Anton Bruckner's birth with a global "Locus iste" at the Brucknerhaus in Linz. This "global hit" by the genius loci Anton Bruckner will be the opening piece of the New Year's Concert and will be performed by choirs, singers and musicians from all over the world.

The Bruckner Orchester Linz, under the direction of its chief conductor Markus Poschner, will kick off the anniversary year with works by Bruckner and birthday dances by composers also celebrating their anniversaries, such as Bedřich Smetana (200th birthday and 140th death anniversary), Leoš Janáček (170th birthday), Charles Ives (150th birthday and 70th death anniversary) and Arnold Schönberg (150th birthday).

The whole of Upper Austria will be the stage for the anniversary year, starting from the "Bruckner Central Region" with Linz, Ansfelden, St. Florian and 32 other places with a biographical connection to the jubilarian. In joint cooperation with municipalities and local cultural organisers, a regional Bruckner programme meets projects and cooperations of the OÖ KulturEXPO.

In addition to the cultural institutions of the state and the city of Linz, the main pillars of the program are the 18 projects that emerged from the Bruckner Year project call held at the beginning of 2023. These will take place throughout Upper Austria.

The program from December 2023 to April 2024

The OÖ KulturEXPO is taking the 200th anniversary of Anton Bruckner's birth as an opportunity to celebratefor an entire year. The first trimester alone - from December 2023 to April 2024 - includes more than 80 events throughout Upper Austria, which are presented in a program booklet.

The first highlight of the OÖ KulturEXPO will take place in December 2023: Under the title "Tremolo" Bruckner's 1st Symphony will be performed at the venue of the world premiere, the Redoutensäle in Linz. At this original venue, the Bruckner Orchester Linz and its chief conductor Markus Poschner will set a prelude to the Bruckner Year. The 1st Symphony and the "Annulled" Symphony will be performed.

In addition, the first trimester program booklet also contains articles on the activities and collaborations, all of which trace Anton Bruckner from a wide variety of perspectives and research approaches - a man who is closely associated with Upper Austria, but whose impact extends far beyond the borders of the state. It is no coincidence that the term "world-famous unknown" is often used in connection with Anton Bruckner. So the whole of 2024 is an invitation to get closer to the great musician Anton Bruckner.
